This post was inspired by the most recent “Style Imitating Art” challenge, as well as by this look here over at Franishh.
South Wind, Clear Sky (aka Fine Wind, Clear Morning aka Red Fuji aka That Print on All Things Japanese) by Katsushika Hokusai
When? October 18, 2012
What for? For another more casual day at work, prepping stats, reports, and teaching materials. My to-do list is still scary long, although it feels good to be crossing (some) things off that list.
I really liked this print for this week’s SIA challenge — so bold yet so serene — and I felt good in this mix of layers and colors. I’ve got five colors going on in this outfit (red, white, black, grey, and chambray), but four of those five colors could be considered neutrals, thus allowing the red to take center stage. I picked my striped red sweater — versus my red cardigan, which I also thought about — because the stripes echoed the lateral clouds in the print. This print also made me think of Mt. Hood, which is near where I live and work (it’s such a treat to see Mt. Hood on the way to work!), and red and black are my school colors. Synergy, y’all.
Update: Check out all the other Red Fugi-inspired outfits over here at 14 Shades of Grey!

nice sweater =)
Thanks! I really like this sweater, which I actually bought in a larger size for its comfort (and layerability)
The chambray under the sweater really helps break up the red and black combo that can sometimes be too harsh. I think you chose wisely
Wow, thanks Erin! You’re right, the chambray does soften the look
I love the whole outfit! Those earrings are beautiful and I love chambray and stripe together. Very chic and comfortable.
Thanks so much Amiyrah!
Great outfit! Love the striped top over the chambray blouse!
Thanks CC — this is my softer chambray button-up that’s more blue in tone. I realized the last time I wore this striped sweater, it was with my gray chambray shirt!
Love the vibrant red top
Thanks Laura! Adding more red into my wardrobe is on my continuing to-do list
You live in Oregon?! I am from Portland! My parents still live there and I am hoping to move back in the near future. I LOVE the Pacific Northwest and it will always be home, no matter where I live
And I am kicking myself, because I was going to buy that sweater, but now I can’t find it at Old Navy anywhere! Love your outfit and thanks for linking up!
Modern Modest Beauty
Hi Jenny, yay for the Pacific Northwest! After living here for about a year and a half, we’re so happy to have found our home base in Portland! And thank you for your Sunday Style series
I haven’t quite figured out how to do the sweater with the chambray shirt but thanks for reminding me I have to try it! You look great! Hi from Sunday Style!
Blessings!!!

Hi Rubi, glad you stopped by! I say just go for it — in the last few years, I have definitely had to try things that were new to me and felt strange at first (scarves, shawls, layering shirts & sweaters, layering tops over dresses, etc.), and now have added so much variety to my closet and how I wear the items I love!
Love the layering, and especially love the flats! Great interpretation of the artwork
Thanks so much, Jess! I really love the SIA series… makes one think outside the frame!
