Silk scarf love

Last week, I found out that I was the lucky winner of a Monday Mingle giveaway, via Nicole @ MomTrends. The prize? Two silk scarves from Echo! I can confirm hand-clapping and in-house jumping when (a) I found out the news and (b) when I received the package a few days later. It was also quite fun to look online and guess which two would be coming my way.

And ta-da!

Such interesting patterns and colors! I like the purple animal print because it’s probably something I would have never picked out for myself, and I’m so glad to get some more animal print in my closet! And I like that it’s an abstract animal print mixed with bright colors.

And this vintage-inspired scarf is lovely, with its basket-weave print and more neutral color palette.

So, of course, I wore one of the scarves the first chance I got.

I also wore my tan trench, which has an animal print lining! Such style synergy, eh? ;)

After today, I am officially on Spring Break (woo-hoo!), but I will be posting throughout next week and participating in the “5 Days, 5 Ways” style challenge hosted by Franish and Whitney @ Along the Lines of Style.

Happy Friday, everyone!

When? December 6, 2012

What for? This is an outfit that I’ve worn slight variations of for years, but I think it’s the first time featured on this blog. I got this tie obi belt at a Chicago art fair years ago — and since made a couple more of my own, as seen here — and really like to pair it with this seamed and structured denim jacket. And these wide-leg trousers are some of the most comfortable items of clothing I own. This is one of those go-to outfits I don’t have to think too much about — perfect for a morning that included 5 alarm-clock snoozes. ;)

And the hairstyle took less than three minutes! I scraped my hair back in a high ponytail, back-combed it for body (and grip), and then swooped it around the base to pin a loose bun. When I described it to the hubby, his deadpan reaction was: “You got that idea from another style blog, didn’t you?” Yep.

Details?

  • Denim jacket:  Kohls, old
  • Trousers:  Gap, old
  • Flats:  DKNY via Macy’s, last fall
  • Tie obi belt:  Chicago art fair, 2007
  • Silver hoop earrings:  Birthday gift from the hubby
  • Striped tank top:  Old Navy, this past summer

Fall fashion swap

I wanted to share with y’all something FUN that happened this weekend… I attended my first fashion swap party! First of all, what’s a fashion swap? It’s when friends (and friends of friends, which is how I got invited) get together and bring gently worn clothes that no longer fit them/their lifestyle/whatever to then swap out with each other. Such a great way to shop for items “new to you” without having to suffer from sticker shock. And best of all, it was for a good cause, as all the leftover items were donated to Dress for Success Oregon and Goodwill. The fashion swap event is still on the Dress for Success Oregon site and still accepting donations!

The more informal event was so well-organized; we drew numbers and had a couple of time-limited rounds to find a single item, and then it was a free-for-all. No cat-fighting, no grabbing, no glimmer of stereotypical girl-shopping media portrayals. On the contrary, the vibe was very supportive, with genuine compliments and lots of “Ooh, you should try this on!” kinds of encouragement. What a fantastic afternoon!

Even though I’ve pared my closet way down the last few years, I still was able to bring quite a few items from my wardrobe, including some accessories, a couple of pairs of shoes, and tops and jackets that I haven’t worn in the past year or two due to their need to be ironed (I’ve just got to face it — I won’t iron stuff unless I have to). So almost nothing I brought to the swap has been showcased on this blog, and that’s ok — I’m glad those clothes went to a good home!

And here’s what I brought back to our home:

Helloooooo, gorgeous!

This silver-and-white sequined tank from LOFT was my first-round pick. A *perfect* top for date night! I’m envisioning this top paired with a black blazer, jeans, and silver strappy sandals.

This sheer navy-blue blouse was my second-round pick. When I first saw it, I instantly thought “Princess Kate,” as this top echoes one of my favorite looks on her US/Canada tour back in 2011.

I also picked up a few other tops, like this basic striped top from the Gap (right), this sweet, sheer floral top perfect for layering (middle), and this navy, beribboned top from Po Pori. Here’s a close-up on the ribbon detailing:

I also picked out four skirts, all of which are a-line (which I only realized once I got home). I guess I really know what silhouettes I like best! :)
The grey-and-black striped skirt (on the left) is United Colors of Benetton, and the white skirt (right) is Banana Republic. I wasn’t able to fully capture the gorgeousness of its winter white shade, the heft of its fabric, or its lovely detailing. Even my husband exclaimed, “Wow!” when I brought out that beauty.

These skirts are more casual. The brightly patterned skirt (right) is from LOFT, and in a lightweight cotton. You can’t really tell from the pic, but it’s pleated, with stitched-down pleats along the top (much like my other cotton pleated skirt seen here). And this denim skirt (the tag reads Royal Robbins) wasn’t even on my radar until someone else recommended I try it on! The denim, which is SUPER soft, has this cool, greyish tone, and also features these fun buttons:

How cool and funky are these buttons?! I love that this special detail is extra-special because these buttons are essentially hidden from regular view.

And last, but not least, a few accessories that I picked up:

This wide, stretchy belt is quite similar to my tan-and-cream belt seen here, and I was also super-excited to snag this metallic plum skinny belt! The scarf (the tag says it’s handmade from a company called “Into Africa”) has the perfect mixture of fall colors, and I like the hint of animal print.

So, all in all, I had so much fun at my first fashion swap experience, and feel so lucky to give these items a warm, loving home in my wardrobe — I’m sure you’ll be seeing all these pieces again soon!

Have you ever been to a fashion swap? If so, let me know and please leave a comment! :)

Inspiration Monday: Polka dot pretty

Inspiration Monday Sept. 17 — Eva Mendes

Date?  Sept. 15, 2012

What for?  I shouted with glee at this week’s “Inspiration Monday” style challenge, as I looooove Eva Mendes’s style. Also, it was another opportunity to bring out one of my favorite dresses, this polka-dot print dress with vintage-y details like the front pleating and keyhole sleeves. I always feel so feminine and pretty wearing this dress (also seen here), in a simple, non-fussy way. If that makes sense. :) And although I don’t have cool teal sunglasses like the divine Miss Eva, I brought the color into my earrings.

And when I showed Sam the inspiration photo (before getting dressed myself), his reaction? “It’s like YOU were the inspiration photo.” ♥

Details?

  • Dress:  Bealls, birthday gift from grandmother-in-law, 2010?
  • Espadrille wedges: Banana Republic, years ago
  • Stretchy belt:  Kohls, 2009?
  • Wicker-and-bakelite purse:  Vintage, Chicago art fair, 2007
  • Bead earrings:  Gift from a friend, Wisconsin, 2007?

Inspiration Monday: Jessica Biel

This week’s fun “Inspiration Monday” style challenge from the two birds blog and boutique brought to you courtesy of Jessica Biel’s monochromatic look. And also perfect for this month’s upcoming Everybody, Everywear challenge. :)

Jessica Biel — Inspiration Monday for August 13

Date?  August 13, 2012

What for?  Back to work! I went for a feminine work look today, mirroring the vibe of Jessica Biel’s nighttime outfit. I added a bow belt, and changed out the heels for sandals, all in shades of cream and tan to keep the look monochromatic. I also added a cardigan when I got to work.

I added a few braids today for a variation on a basic ponytail. I started out by braiding two small sections on one side of my standard side part, and one section on the other, then pulling the braids and the rest of my hair back in a low ponytail.

Details?

  • Cotton skirt:  Walmart, years ago
  • Tank top:  ???? too long ago to remember
  • Sandals:  Target (new)
  • Bow belt:  Mango, came with a dress, UAE (2010)
  • Bronze hoop earrings:  Kohls, a few years ago
