United in stripes

For the past couple of months, my faculty union has sent out weekly style challenges for us to show our support. Work and blogging worlds collide! ;) This week’s challenge was to wear stripes. Done. And it was the first time I’ve worn my new black-and-white striped dress to work.

Sam and I took a little stroll down our street after work and made the acquaintance of a friendly cat. Turns out his name is Maxamillion. That’s so money. ;)

I cracked up at this photo above and how similar our stances are. Two typical Leos!

SIA: Soft and sweet

It’s SIA time again! This week’s inspiration is a painting from one of my favorite artists, Mary Cassatt.

Inspiration:

“Feeding the Ducks,” Mary Cassatt, 1895

Interpretation:

After looking at the painting for some time, I decided to go for a modern update of the woman in orange and navy. Alas, no puffed sleeves. ;)

I definitely wanted to keep that soft, easy feeling the painting evokes, so I kept my hair down and the accessories sweet (see my bee earrings below, made with old dictionary definitions). And boats make me think of straw and wicker, so out came my vintage wicker purse.

And yes, those are new flats to replace my sadly departed and beloved bronze flats (see yesterday’s tribute post). My bronze flats were on the lighter side of bronze, so I thought this champagne-y hue echoed my original pair (and will still be a versatile color), while the mix of fabrics recalls the detailing on my grey flats. They’re super comfortable, as well — the entire Dexflex and Dexter lines at Payless are all straight-out-of-the-box comfortable — and I scooped them up on sale with a discount code!

Inspiration Monday: Orange + white

This week’s “Inspiration Monday” challenge is from one of my faves, Olivia Palermo. I wore this look last Friday, but I can’t really count a dress-and-tights combo as a “casual Friday” look. But gingham always retains that certain “casual” air, right? :)

My mother’s vintage dress got another outing this week, and even though I layered on a shirt and denim jacket, the top of the dress finally got a chance to prove that it is, indeed, a dress! ;)

Gingham + preppy

Today was the day for the “preppy look” option I posed to my husband last week, inspired by Lisa’s classic look @ Respect the Shoes.

Our girl Bronte stopped by again to say hi

And I was pleasantly surprised when a student today complimented me on my “business casual attire”  – this brought a smile to my day at the library. :)

Copycats cargo love

It’s the last Friday of the month (and year, eek!), so it’s time for another CopyCats challenge! :)

When? December 24, 2012

What for? I love Sasha’s combo of gingham and cargo vest, itself a pairing inspired by Blair @ Atlantic-Pacific! Just the casual, comfy combo to wear to an early-morning doctor’s appointment (it’s funny that I wore this same gingham shirt to a dental appointment earlier in the year). ;) I switched the cluster of pearls to my ears, and switched out the nude patent leather heels for my beloved bronze flats. And having no pink gingham, I went instead for my orange gingham camp shirt. It’s a soft orange, though, so the effect is similar.

And yes I’m trying yet another variation of the rope braid. This is the braid style that keeps on giving! This time, I started low on one side and continued over to the other side for a low ponytail. I didn’t even brush out my hair; I started braiding with just-woken-up hair. Below are some other ways I’ve worn the rope braid:
