Black and brown and bronze

This post was inspired by the most recent “Style Imitating Art” challenge. The artistic inspiration this time comes from the Caves of Lascaux — how cool is that?!

First up, the caves:

Caves of Lascaux

When? September 19, 2012

What for? Hitting the ground running at work, prepping for when I officially start my new job on Friday. (Yes, I know, it may seem absurd to write that I am prepping to prep for a new job, but there are TONS of things to do in a college library before the rush of a new term! Plus, I am obviously a glutton for punishment.)

Loving the inspiration of the caves and cave drawings, I focused on the color palette of black, brown, and bronze. (Plus, Gracey @ Fashion for Giants got me thinking recently about pairing black with brown.) This linen-and-cotton shirtdress is an earthy black to my eyes — the cumulative effect of all that gold/bronze stitching? — that just looks natural with brown and tan tones. So I played that purposeful pairing up with my fave tan-and-cream stretchy belt (last seen here), bronze flats, gold earrings, and (not seen in these pics) a brown tote bag. And I added a little French touch with the gold-and-black cameo necklace. ‘Cause I’m classy like that. :)

Update:  Check out all the other lovely ladies inspired by the Caves of Lascaux.

Neutral layers inspiration

Jessica Alba layered inspiration, via IHOD

Nope, no paparazzi here. Unless you count my husband. :)

Of COURSE the edge of my tank top flipped up just in time for this pic! ;)

When?  September 18, 2012

What for?  An informal library meeting off campus, so I opted for a more casual look (not often I get to wear shorts while doing work stuff, yahoo!). I’ve been going back to this pic of Jessica Alba’s neutral layered look for quite awhile, as it’s such a subtle yet chic look. I finally decided to do my own version of it; however, there was no scarf, sweater, or closed-toe shoes — because it’s still 90 degrees outside! I like the layers of neutrals (which I’m been doing quite a lot of lately, hmm… ), so I will probably also do a cooler-weather version later on.

Summer’s end

In front of a cool mural in the St. John’s area

At the Peninsula Park Rose Garden. I totally burst out singing the “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” song while walking along the fountain edge. :)

Having fun at the Peninsula Park Rose Garden. This was Sam’s favorite pic of the day!

When? Sept. 16, 2012

What for? This post isn’t so much about the clothes, but rather the mood, I guess. Facing a week of prepping and library-work-related stuff (even though I don’t *officially* start until this Friday), I suggested to Sam a “last summer’s day” full of activities we wanted to do and just hadn’t gotten around to yet. As my mom likes to say, “It’s an adventure!” So off we went to play pool (something we are TERRIBLE at, but it’s so much fun!), window-shop and coffeeshop around the St. John’s area in North Portland, and stroll through the Peninsula Park Rose Garden (the oldest public rose garden in Portland!). We also took in an early-afternoon showing of the Wes Anderson film Moonrise Kingdom — which had a house in it called “Summer’s End” — so perfect!

And although we didn’t take the camera along to record our adventures, Sam still managed to snap a few fun pics with his iPod.

Inspiration Monday: Polka dot pretty

Inspiration Monday Sept. 17 — Eva Mendes

Date?  Sept. 15, 2012

What for?  I shouted with glee at this week’s “Inspiration Monday” style challenge, as I looooove Eva Mendes’s style. Also, it was another opportunity to bring out one of my favorite dresses, this polka-dot print dress with vintage-y details like the front pleating and keyhole sleeves. I always feel so feminine and pretty wearing this dress (also seen here), in a simple, non-fussy way. If that makes sense. :) And although I don’t have cool teal sunglasses like the divine Miss Eva, I brought the color into my earrings.

And when I showed Sam the inspiration photo (before getting dressed myself), his reaction? “It’s like YOU were the inspiration photo.” ♥
